The poem I have chosen is “The Sad Mother” by Gabriela Mistral.

Sleep, sleep, my beloved,
without worry, without fear,
although my soul does not sleep,
although I do not rest.

Sleep, sleep, and in the night
may your whispers be softer
than a leaf of grass,
or the silken fleece of lambs.

May my flesh slumber in you,
my worry, my trembling.
In you, may my eyes close
and my heart sleep.

by Gabriela Mistral

This poem shows the love and stress mothers have for their child and how everything changes when you have a baby such as a lack of sleep. But also it can be so precious, with the baby’s soft skin being attached to the mothers. Mothers will do everything in their will to keep their baby safe which includes mothers having to give up things they love or love to do just so their baby can be happy. The mother in this poem wants sleep so bad but is also so happy to see her baby safe and sound asleep. It looks as to me Gabriela Mistral tends to write poems   with sadness and about families.

I feel as if the tone of this poem is calm/excited and kind of overwhelmed/anxious mixed. I say this because she’s clearly happy/excited with having her new born baby. But at the same time she seems scared/overwhelmed as if it’s going to be allot to get use to and adjust too.

Gabriela Mistral has many great examples of figurative language. Starting with the metaphor in stanza 2. “may your whispers be softer than a leaf of grass,..” she’s comparing the baby’s whistles in her sleep to a piece of grass showing how subtle it is. Another example is another metaphors she uses in also in stanza 2. ..”or the silken fleece of lambs.” This metaphors is also comparing the baby whistles and skin to the coat of lambs. Showing how soft the baby is.

Gabriela Mistral was born in Vicuña, Chile. She was a daughter of a poet, so I guess you could say it was in her blood. She began writing poetry as a school teacher after her employee, who she had a romance with, committed suicide. Gabriel had many degrees from universities of Florence and Guatemala. And lastly but sadly she died January 10, 1957, Town of Hempstead, NY.
