Certeza

Image-
My image was a picture of a man with his eyes closed. Beside his face he had his hand curled
up in a parenthesis form. This image was in black and white. I chose this because it
was not very clear on what the man was trying to do. Having the image in black and white
also made it seem unclear on what the artist wanted just like the poet.
Biographical Information-
Octavio Paz was born on March 31, 1914 in Mexico City. He was born into a family of mainly
writers. He was first introduced to literature at a very young age at his grandfathers library.
He began to write as a teenager and years after that began to edit. During his lifetime
Octavio wrote more than 20 poetry collections and books. He received the Noble Prize for
literature in 1990. The writer died on April 19, 1998 in Mexico City.
Analyzing-
The poem Certeza is referring to certainty. The poet, Octavio Paz was discussing the topic
about being uncertain on what life is. He wasn't sure if everything we see, do, or hear
is really happening. The speaker is someone who isn't sure of what they're seeing or doing.
The speaker is someone with uncertainty to life. Because the speaker is a person like this we
can assume that they have many questions to life. The poet incorporates many questions
into his writing. His first line introducing his poem says "Si es real la luz blanca de esta
lámpara". As we see from the title, the first impression to what he's writing about is shown.
He continues to ask more questions as we saw from his first line. Octavio incorporates more
simple questions on life into his poem on certainty. The form in which the poet wrote his
poem was very short. He uses just one stanza for his writing. Octavio brought all his
thoughts and ideas into a very condensed poem, which got all his writing and points across.
The tone in which this poem was written is in a tone of curiosity of life. The poet wrote this
questioning all that happens in life. A constructed theme on this poem would be that we can
never be fully sure about anything happening in life.
Certeza
Si es real la luz blanca
de esta lámpara, real
la mano que escribe, ¿son reales
los ojos que miran lo escrito?
De una palabra a la otra
lo que digo se desvanece.
Yo sé que estoy vivo
entre dos paréntesis.
